War of the Spanish Succession
1701–1714 European great power conflict
The War of the Spanish Succession, 1701 to 1714, was a European great power conflict, caused by the death of Charles II of Spain in November 1700 without children. This led to a succession crisis between Philip of Anjou, grandson of Louis XIV of France, and Archduke Charles of Austria, backed by the Grand Alliance. Related conflicts include the Great Northern War and Queen Anne's War in North America.
