Shlomo Carlebach

American rabbi and musician (1925–1994)

Shlomo Carlebach (Hebrew: שלמה קרליבך; January 14, 1925 – October 20, 1994), known as Reb Shlomo to his followers, was an American rabbi and musician nicknamed "the Singing Rabbi". Although his roots lay in traditional Orthodox yeshivot, he branched out to create his own style, combining Hasidic Judaism, warmth and personal interaction, public concerts, and song-filled synagogue services. At various times he lived in Manhattan, San Francisco, Toronto, and a moshav he founded, Mevo Modi'im, in Israel.
