Quill
Writing instrument made from a feather
A quill is a writing tool made from a moulted flight feather of a large bird. Quills were used for writing with ink before the invention of the dip pen, the fountain pen, and the ballpoint pen. As with many antiquated writing instruments, quills have no internal ink reservoir and therefore need to be dipped into an inkwell periodically during writing.
