Tool for working with wood

Plane (tool)

A hand plane is a tool for shaping wood using muscle power to force the cutting iron (blade) over the wood surface. Some rotary power planers are motorized power tools used for similar tasks, but are less suitable for fine-scale planing, where a hand plane is used. Generally, planes can be used to flatten, reduce the thickness of, and/ or impart a smooth surface to a rough or non-flat piece of lumber or timber.
