Ovonramwen
Oba of Benin (1888 or 1889 until deposition in 1897)
Ovonramwen (born Idugbowa; 1857 – 14 January 1914; rendered Overami in British records) was the thirty-fifth Oba ('king') of the Kingdom of Benin and its final ruler before the kingdom lost its political independence at the end of the nineteenth century. He succeeded his father, Adolo, in either 1888 or 1889 and adopted the regnal name Ovonramwen n'Ogbaisi ('The Rising Sun Which Spreads Over All'). His early reign involved rivalry between established palace chiefs and supporters of his accession, executions and court purges, provincial disputes and efforts to maintain Benin's authority as British influence expanded across the western Niger Delta and adjoining interior.
