Odonata

Order of insects that includes the dragonflies and damselflies

Odonata

Odonata is an order of predatory flying insects that includes dragonflies (Anisoptera), damselflies (Zygoptera), as well as the three relict species of damsel-dragonflies (Anisozygoptera), the latter two often grouped together. These groups are distinguished by the bulkier build, larger, usually contiguous, compound eyes, and, a typically horizontal resting position of wings of dragonflies, and by the slender body, smaller, laterally-placed eyes, and, a typically closed resting position of the wings of damselflies. Intermediate characters are found in damsel-dragonflies (Epiophlebia).
