Humberto da Silva Delgado (Portuguese pronunciation: [ũˈbɛɾtu dɛɫˈɡadu]; 15 May 1906 – 13 February 1965) was a Portuguese General of the Air Force, diplomat and politician. He is known for being a prominent opponent of the dictatorial Estado Novo regime who contested the 1958 presidential election with great popular support, despite the widespread electoral fraud that ensured his defeat. Delgado was assassinated by PIDE agents near Villanueva del Fresno close to the Portugal–Spain border on 13 February 1965.
