Capitalism is an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and their use for obtaining profit. It includes features such as private property, the profit motive, capital accumulation, competitive markets, commodification, wage labor, and an emphasis on innovation and economic growth. Modern capitalism evolved from agrarianism in England and mercantilist practices across Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries.
