History of Benin

Early evidence of human settlement in the area of modern Benin can be found in the Atakora mountain chain of north-western Benin. Systematic surveys and excavations have identified caves, rock shelters and open-air sites with lithic industries spanning the Early, Middle and Later Stone Age. Didier N'Dah's work at sites such as Kumaaku, Tanongou and the Pendjari area has reconstructed a chronocultural sequence from Early Stone Age to Late Stone Age, based on the typology of stone tools and comparisons with better-dated regions of West Africa.
