Five Pillars of Islam

Five basic acts in Islam

The Five Pillars of Islam (arkān al-Islām أركان الإسلام; also arkān ad-dīn أركان الدين "pillars of the religion") are fundamental practices in Islam, considered to be obligatory acts of worship for all Muslims. They form the foundation of Islamic religious practice and consist of the shahada (profession of faith), salah (prayer), zakat (almsgiving), sawm (fasting during Ramadan), and hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). Although the Five Pillars are particularly emphasized in Sunni Islam, Shia Muslims also recognize these practices as fundamental to Islam, while their classification and detailed formulation may differ.
