Buckingham Canal

The Buckingham Canal is a 796 kilometres (494.6 mi)-long brackish-water navigation canal system running roughly parallel to the Coromandel Coast of South India, from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh to Marakkanam in Tamil Nadu. It links a chain of coastal backwaters and waterways and passes through Chennai. Developed in stages under British rule from 1806, the canal became an important coastal transport route during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
