Autonomous Republic of Crimea

The Autonomous Republic of Crimea is a de jure administrative division of Ukraine encompassing most of Crimea that was unilaterally annexed by Russia in 2014, and is now, de facto, administered as the Republic of Crimea within the Russian Federation. The Autonomous Republic of Crimea encompasses most of the peninsula, while the City of Sevastopol (a city with special status within Ukraine) occupies the rest. The Cimmerians, Scythians, Greeks, Goths, Huns, Bulgars, Khazars, Byzantine Greeks, the state of Kievan Rus', Kipchaks, Italians, and Golden Horde Mongols and Tatars each controlled Crimea in its earlier history.
